Black Drawings
I often ask myself what makes a good painting. Over the time, I have come up with several explanations, but, at this moment, I think that it has to contain two elements : colour and line. It might sound too simple, but it’s not so. While reflecting about the meaning of drawing inside the subject of Outremer, I feel more and more like an ethologist of light and shadow, because, what is the universe of the sea if not the light and shadow of transparant material.
This part of my work – again a consequence of the inhospitable conditions in my studio – concentrates on the line, even if, as I am a painter, the line is the border of a surface.
Some of these drawings are not exactly black, but one has to allow oneself some liberty.
